I’m an American journalist based in Tokyo.
I have worked as a staff writer for The Associated Press, Businessweek and Monocle, covering culture, business, travel, design and politics in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia.
At Monocle, I was part of a small editorial team that planned, wrote and edited The Monocle Book of Japan and the Monocle Travel Guides for Tokyo, Kyoto and Honolulu.
As a freelance journalist, I have written features on the Tokyo Olympics (Sports Illustrated), fashion brand Undercover's designer Jun Takahashi (Fantastic Man), Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (New Statesman), The World's Best Rice (Taste) and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region (The Los Angeles Times). I grew up in San Diego, California, and graduated from Harvard University.
I am currently working on a book about Japan’s rice culture.
